WWII-Era Grenade Found During Bethpage Basement Cleanup, Bomb Squad Responds

BETHPAGE, N.Y. — A World War II-era grenade discovered during a basement cleanup at a Bethpage home prompted a response from the Nassau County Police Department's Arson Bomb Squad and Emergency Services Unit on Wednesday morning.

According to investigators, the incident unfolded at approximately 11 a.m. when a 60-year-old woman was cleaning the basement of her home on Broadway near Cherry Avenue in Bethpage and came across what appeared to be a suspicious explosive device. She immediately contacted authorities.

Responding officers secured the area and requested assistance from the Nassau County Police Emergency Services Unit and Arson Bomb Squad detectives, who responded to evaluate the item.

After examining the device, investigators determined it appeared to be a World War II-style grenade. The grenade was safely secured, transported to a secure location, and destroyed without incident, police said.

Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public following the incident.
