Three Boats Damaged After Intense Marina Fire Erupts in Freeport

FREEPORT, N.Y. — At least three boats were damaged in a late-night marina fire on Tuesday that prompted a large multi-agency response in Freeport.

Just before 11:50 p.m. on Tuesday, the Freeport Fire Department and Freeport Police Department responded to Rick's Marine on East Bedell Street after receiving multiple reports of several boats on fire in the marina.

When firefighters and police arrived, they were met with two boats fully engulfed in flames, while a third boat had begun catching fire.

Firefighters launched an aggressive attack on the blaze, utilizing the deck gun from a fire engine to knock down the heavy flames while additional crews advanced hose lines to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby vessels and structures.

At least three boats were damaged in the fire. It was not immediately known whether any additional vessels stored nearby sustained damage from the intense heat generated by the flames.

Mutual aid was requested from the Hempstead Fire Department and Roosevelt Fire Department, whose firefighters assisted crews already operating at the scene. A Freeport Fire Department foam unit was also requested to help extinguish the fire.

The fire was brought under control at approximately 12:20 a.m. Wednesday.

No injuries were reported.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office responded to the scene early Wednesday morning to investigate the incident. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
