NYSDOT Truck Flips on Southern State Parkway, Crashes Through Guardrail in North Massapequa

NORTH MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. — A New York State Department of Transportation truck overturned on the Southern State Parkway Monday afternoon, leaving its driver injured and causing significant traffic disruptions in both directions.

The crash occurred just after 12:50 p.m. on the Southern State Parkway, just east of Exit 29, when the NYSDOT truck overturned onto its side and crashed through a guardrail in the center median.

With the help of good samaritans who witnessed the crash, the driver was helped out of the vehicle prior to the arrival of first responders.

The driver, who was the vehicle's only reported occupant, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was transported to an area hospital.

Firefighters from the North Massapequa Fire Department assisted with containing oil that was leaking from the overturned truck following the crash.

Multiple emergency agencies responded to the scene, including the New York State Police and Nassau County Police Department.

The collision forced heavy traffic delays in both directions of the parkway as emergency crews worked to secure the scene. As of late Monday afternoon, lanes remained closed while heavy-duty tow trucks worked to upright the overturned state truck and the trailer it had been towing.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the New York State Police.
