Box Truck Overturns, Crashes Into Front Yard Following Syosset Collision

SYOSSET, N.Y. — A box truck overturned and crashed into the front yard of a Syosset home late Tuesday morning following a two-vehicle collision on Berry Hill Road, prompting nearby residents to rush to the driver’s aid.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Berry Hill Road between Meadowbrook Road and School House Lane.

Witnesses told Priority News Network that the two vehicles were traveling in opposite directions on Berry Hill Road when the sedan struck the construction truck near its rear driver’s-side tire, causing the truck to lose control and overturn onto its driver’s side. The collision caused extensive damage to the sedan.

In the moments following the crash, witnesses and neighbors rushed to assist both drivers. One nearby resident grabbed a ladder and brought it to the overturned box truck, helping with efforts to get the driver out of the truck.

The truck driver was not injured.

The driver of the sedan was transported to an area hospital for medical treatment following the collision. The extent of that driver’s injuries was not immediately available.

The crash also prompted an environmental response after a saddle fuel tank on the overturned truck was reportedly ruptured, spilling diesel at the scene. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation responded, while the Hicksville Fire Department’s hazardous materials team assisted with the spill.

As the truck overturned, it landed on and damaged a fire hydrant along the property. Neighbors said the hydrant had been newly installed only hours before the crash.

Jericho Water District employees were later seen inspecting the damaged hydrant after crews pulled the truck off it and returned the vehicle upright.

Berry Hill Road remained closed in both directions between Meadowbrook Road and School House Lane Tuesday afternoon as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage, address the fuel spill and upright the overturned truck.

The circumstances leading up to the collision have not yet been released. Nassau County Police are investigating.

The Syosset Fire Department, Hicksville Fire Department, Nassau County Police Department and Oyster Bay Cove Police Department responded to the scene.
