Widespread Coastal Flooding Inundates Southern Suffolk, Prompts Water Rescue

SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. — Severe coastal flooding inundated waterfront communities across southern Suffolk County on Saturday morning, leaving roads impassable, stranding motorists and prompting at least one water rescue as a powerful nor’easter battered Long Island.

Floodwaters spread across low-lying neighborhoods in Amityville, Lindenhurst and West Babylon as persistent onshore winds pushed water into bays and canals around the morning high tide.

In Amityville, Riverside Avenue was inundated south of Merrick Road, with floodwaters making the roadway impassable through Griffing Avenue.

Flooding also impacted several residential streets in Lindenhurst. Along West Riviera Drive south of West Hollywood Avenue, residents were seen parking their vehicles and continuing home on foot through the floodwaters after encountering inundated roadways.

On South 9th Street just south of Montauk Highway, floodwaters covered the entire roadway. A sedan attempting to make a delivery was seen quickly backing out of the flooded street, creating a wake as the driver encountered increasingly deep water. The street was also reportedly without power during the flooding.

In nearby West Babylon, first responders were called to a water rescue near Sandpiper Lane and Bergen Avenue after an occupant of an SUV became stranded in floodwaters.

The widespread flooding came as the powerful nor’easter continued to batter Long Island with strong onshore winds, rough coastal conditions and elevated water levels across vulnerable South Shore communities.

Additional coastal flooding remained a concern as the storm continued impacting the region through the weekend.
