BAY PARK, N.Y. — A fast-moving house fire on Waterview Street triggered a large-scale emergency response Monday afternoon, drawing several fire departments to the scene.

At around 2:15 p.m., the East Rockaway Fire Department was dispatched to Waterview Street near Fifth Avenue in Bay Park for reports of a deck fire.

When fire crews arrived, they discovered that the flames had spread into a single-family home, quickly intensifying into a fully involved structure fire.

The fire spread rapidly, causing significant damage to the home connected to the deck and heat damage to a neighboring home. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky, visible from miles away as firefighters worked aggressively to contain the blaze.

Mutual aid was requested from several neighboring departments, including Island Park, Lynbrook, Oceanside, Rockville Centre, and Woodmere, along with Atlantic Beach Rescue. In total, roughly 70 personnel operated at the scene.

Due to the canal-side location of the home, a fire boat was deployed during the response to assist with suppression efforts from the water.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office also responded, deploying both its Hazardous Materials Division and Drone Unit. Officials did not specify what prompted the hazmat response, but confirmed that conditions at the scene warranted additional precautionary measures.

There were no injuries reported in the fire, though one resident was displaced as a result of the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office and Nassau County Police Arson/Bomb Squad.
