Police Vehicle Slams Into Utility Pole in Franklin Square

FRANKLIN SQUARE, N.Y. — A Nassau County police patrol vehicle slammed into a utility pole in Franklin Square on Tuesday afternoon, snapping the pole near its base and forcing the closure of Franklin Avenue for several hours.

The crash happened around 2:20 p.m. between Adams Avenue and Van Buren Avenue, where the 5th Precinct patrol vehicle left the roadway and struck the pole.

The impact left the pole broken and suspended above the street, with utility wires hanging over the roadway. The police vehicle sustained extensive damage.

Information regarding the condition of the officer involved was not immediately available. Witnesses at the scene described the officer’s apparent injuries as minor.

Franklin Avenue was closed in the area as the damaged patrol vehicle was towed from the scene and PSEG Long Island crews worked to replace the broken pole and repair the affected utility lines.

The roadway remained closed into Tuesday evening while utility work continued.

It was not immediately clear what caused the patrol vehicle to leave the roadway. The crash remains under investigation.
