Pedestrian Walking on Sunrise Highway Struck, Seriously Injured in West Babylon

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. — A pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle while walking in the eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway Tuesday night, Suffolk County Police said.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. between Exit 37 and Exit 38, where police said a man was walking in the eastbound lanes when he was struck by a 2014 Kia Optima.

The pedestrian, whose identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for treatment of serious injuries.

The driver of the Kia, identified by police as a 50-year-old woman, was not injured in the crash.

It remains unclear why the pedestrian was walking in the eastbound lanes of the highway. The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation by Suffolk County Police detectives.
