Scaffolding Collapse Sends 2 Workers Into Trench in Muttontown; 1 Airlifted

MUTTONTOWN, N.Y. — Two construction workers were injured Friday afternoon after scaffolding reportedly collapsed at a residential property in Muttontown, sending both men into a trench up to 15 feet below grade.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:55 p.m. at a property along Brookville Road, where the workers were performing construction work when the scaffolding they were using reportedly gave way.

Both workers fell approximately 10 to 15 feet into a below-grade trench.

Prior to the arrival of first responders, one of the workers was able to climb out of the trench. The second worker remained at the bottom and was unable to get out on his own.

Members of the Nassau County Police Department’s Emergency Service Unit worked alongside firefighters from multiple departments to rescue the injured worker from the below-grade area.

The worker who was able to exit the trench before first responders arrived was also injured and transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment.

The second worker was removed from the trench following the rescue operation and airlifted by the Nassau County Police Department’s Aviation Bureau to another area hospital. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known.
