BALDWIN, N.Y. — A massive fire broke out in a Baldwin apartment building on Merrick Road Thursday morning, displacing up to 200 residents.

According to detectives, officers from the Nassau County Police Department’s First Precinct responded to the scene at approximately 11:27 a.m. after receiving reports of a building fire. When police arrived, they discovered the roof of the structure fully engulfed in flames.

The building, which housed between 160 and 200 residents, suffered significant damage as the Baldwin Fire Department and hundreds of firefighters from other Nassau County fire departments worked to battle the blaze. Officials confirmed that all residents were safely evacuated and no civilian injuries were reported.

One Nassau County police officer and one Baldwin firefighter suffered smoke inhalation while responding to the fire. Both were evaluated on the scene and did not require hospitalization.

Due to partial roof collapses in several areas, the building has been deemed uninhabitable and is in the process of being condemned. The American Red Cross is assisting displaced residents, providing emergency shelter and support services.
