Coach Bus Plunges Through Parking Garage After Collapse in North New Hyde Park

NORTH NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. — A coach bus plunged through the top level of an underground parking garage Tuesday evening, leaving the bus hanging dangerously over the edge and triggering a massive emergency response.

The incident happened around 5:20 p.m. at 1979 Marcus Avenue, according to police.

Witnesses say the bus was driving on the surface level of the property — which sits atop an underground garage — when it crossed over speed bumps and the pavement gave way beneath it. The rear of the bus dropped through the collapsed area, partially suspending the front end of the bus in the air.

Nassau County Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro confirmed the driver was inside the bus during the incident but was not injured. No other injuries have been reported.

The entire Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department responded, backed by 10 mutual aid fire companies from Nassau’s technical rescue response matrix.

Emergency crews remained on scene into the evening, evaluating the structural stability of the garage and working to secure the bus. The cause of the collapse is under investigation.

A heavy-duty wrecker responded to the scene to remove the bus from the collapsed zone.

The cause of the collapse is under investigation by officials, but the intense heatwave baking Long Island may have contributed to the failure of the structure.
