Ducklings Rescued from Gilgo Beach Storm Drain by Suffolk Police

GILGO BEACH, N.Y. — Suffolk County Marine Bureau officers rescued nine ducklings from a storm drain in Gilgo Beach on Monday evening.

At around 8:10PM on Tuesday, Officers John Rodriguez and Robert Mroczkowski were conducting a routine beach patrol at Gilgo Beach when they were flagged down by concerned beachgoers. The individuals informed the officers that several ducklings had fallen into a storm drain on Broadway.

The officers located the storm drain and confirmed that the ducklings were trapped beneath the grate. Acting quickly, they retrieved a crowbar, pried open the metal grate, and entered the confined space below to reach the distressed animals.

All nine ducklings were safely removed from the drain without injury. Their mother was observed waiting nearby throughout the rescue effort.

The ducklings were safely reunited with their mother, and the family made their way into the waters of the Great South Bay.
