Police Fatally Shoot Armed Man After Mother Stabbed More Than 40 Times on Mother’s Day in Suffolk County
NORTHAMPTON, N.Y. — A man armed with a knife was shot and killed by police officers Sunday afternoon after he repeatedly stabbed his disabled mother multiple times during a violent domestic incident on Mother’s Day.
According to Suffolk County Police, the incident unfolded at approximately 2:40 p.m. on Topping Drive in Northampton after the victim called 911, reporting that her 28-year-old son, identified as Steven Eastwood, was intoxicated and acting violently inside the home. Investigators say the woman called back moments later, reporting that Eastwood was threatening her with a knife.
Police said responding officers from the Southampton Town Police Department arrived to find Eastwood armed with a knife and standing over his mother, who was lying on the floor bleeding from multiple stab wounds.
Authorities say officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, but Eastwood continued attacking and stabbing his mother relentlessly in front of them. Officers then opened fire, fatally striking him in an effort to stop the attack.
Investigators said the woman suffered more than 40 apparent stab and slash wounds. She was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries and remains hospitalized.
Three Southampton Town Police officers were also transported to a local hospital for evaluation and later released.
Police confirmed officers had responded to the same residence multiple times over the past decade for prior domestic incidents.
The New York State Attorney General’s Office responded to the scene and are assisting the Suffolk County Police Department Homicide Squad with the investigation, which remains ongoing.
