VIDEO: Good Samaritans Rescue Driver Moments Before SUV Bursts Into Flames on LIE
LAKE RONKONKOMA, N.Y. — Dramatic video obtained by Priority News Network shows the moment good samaritans rescued a driver moments before the overturned SUV burst into flames on the Long Island Expressway early Sunday evening.
The crash occurred eastbound on the Long Island Expressway, just east of the Hawkins Avenue overpass, at around 4:10 p.m.
According to witnesses, the SUV was traveling eastbound when it crashed, flipped over the guardrail, and overturned in a ditch on the side of the highway. Moments later, smoke and flames began pouring from the wrecked vehicle.
Video from the scene shows numerous bystanders rushing to rescue the driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, as smoke and flames begin to intensify. Only moments later, the SUV became engulfed in flames.
At least one good samaritan was seen carrying the injured driver away from the wreckage in his arms. The driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to reports.
Firefighters arrived shortly afterward and extinguished the blaze while emergency crews treated the injured driver.
Traffic in the area was heavily impacted during the emergency response.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The Long Island Expressway has since reopened.
