Nor’easter Floods Freeport, Leaving Streets Impassable and Vehicles Stranded

FREEPORT, N.Y. — Severe coastal flooding inundated waterfront neighborhoods in Freeport on Saturday morning, leaving streets impassable, stranding vehicles and forcing residents to wade through high water as a powerful nor’easter battered Long Island.

Streets south of Atlantic Avenue were overwhelmed by floodwaters during the morning high tide. In some of the hardest-hit areas, water rose to waist level, making numerous roadways impassable.

Along South Long Beach Avenue, south of Casino Street, at least two vehicles became stranded in deep floodwaters as coastal flooding peaked late Saturday morning.

Residents attempting to return home were seen parking their vehicles on higher ground and continuing on foot, wading through flooded streets to reach their homes.

The flooding followed the arrival of a powerful nor’easter Friday evening that brought strong onshore winds and rough coastal conditions to Long Island. Prolonged onshore flow pushed water into vulnerable South Shore communities and canals, contributing to significant flooding during the morning high tide.

Strong wind gusts also caused damage throughout the Freeport area. Near Gladys Lane and Laurette Lane, crews were seen cutting apart and removing a tree that had fallen across the roadway.
