Flames Rip Through 350-Year-Old Milleridge Inn in Jericho

JERICHO, N.Y. — A fire broke out at the historic Milleridge Inn in Jericho Thursday night, drawing firefighters from numerous departments to the centuries-old Long Island landmark.

The Jericho Fire Department was dispatched to the Milleridge Inn at 585 N. Broadway just before 9:35 p.m. after initially receiving an automatic fire alarm from the property. Shortly afterward, 911 callers reported seeing flames coming from the east side of the building.

Firefighters arrived and began battling the blaze as additional departments were called to the scene.

The fire was knocked down and brought under control within approximately 30 minutes.

Fire departments responding to the scene included Bethpage, Plainview, Hicksville, Westbury and Carle Place, among others.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Milleridge Inn is one of Long Island's best-known historic properties, with roots dating to 1672, when the site was established by the Quaker Willets family. The property later served as a way station during the Revolutionary War, lodging British and Hessian soldiers, and survived another fire during the 19th century.

Thursday night's blaze was not the first time firefighters have responded to a fire at the historic inn.

In May 2014, firefighters from eight local departments battled a fire at the Milleridge Inn that officials determined was caused by a pan left on top of a stove. That fire was ruled non-suspicious.
