Mercedes Left Stranded After Driving Into Flooded South Farmingdale Underpass
SOUTH FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — A silver Mercedes sedan became stranded in floodwaters Monday afternoon after driving through a heavily flooded section of Merritts Road beneath the railroad overpass.
The incident occurred at around 12:35 p.m. on Merritts Road just south of Hempstead Turnpike in South Farmingdale, where torrential rainfall had caused significant flooding beneath the railroad overpass.
According to witnesses, the Mercedes became disabled after entering the standing water and was unable to continue. The driver safely exited the vehicle and was not injured.
Nassau County Police closed the affected stretch of Merritts Road as rain continued to batter Long Island. The roadway remained closed into Monday afternoon as persistent heavy rainfall continued to worsen flooding conditions and make the underpass unsafe for motorists.
The underpass has experienced flooding during periods of heavy rain in the past, and emergency officials continue to remind drivers never to attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Even relatively shallow water can disable a vehicle or hide hazards beneath the surface.
Motorists were urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while the flooding persisted. It was not immediately known when the roadway would reopen.
