Knife-Wielding Man Barricades Himself in Melville Office Building; Taken Into Custody After Standoff

MELVILLE, N.Y. — A knife-wielding man barricaded himself inside a Broadhollow Road office building Tuesday night, prompting a large police response and a tense hours-long standoff.

The Melville Fire Department and the Suffolk County Police Department were called to the office building at 555 Broadhollow Road before 10:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Police officers and emergency medical personnel arrived at the building and encountered a male armed with a knife inside an office suite.

First responders quickly assessed the situation and backed away to safety as the man barricaded himself inside the suite. Video from the scene shows the shirtless man pacing with a knife in hand, later using office furniture to block the suite’s windows.

The Suffolk County Police Department’s Emergency Service Unit responded shortly afterward, arriving in full tactical gear and deploying armored vehicles to the site as negotiations began.

After nearly two and a half hours, ESU officers breached the barricaded office and were able to take the man into custody at around 12:33 a.m. on Wednesday. He was transported to a nearby hospital for a psychological evaluation.

No injuries were reported throughout the incident, which prompted a significant emergency response but ended peacefully.

The identity of the man has not been released, and it remains unclear why he was inside the building at that hour. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
