Garbage Truck Driver Pleads Guilty in Deadly Hauppauge Crash That Killed 24-Year-Old
HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. — A garbage truck driver who caused a fatal crash two years ago has pleaded guilty to several charges, prosecutors announced Thursday.
Jaswinder Singh admitted to his role in the tragic five-vehicle collision that claimed the life of 24-year-old Joseph Kelly. Prosecutors say Singh was speeding along the Long Island Expressway’s South Service Road when he slammed into a line of cars stopped at a red light near Express Drive South.
Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene. Several others were injured in the destructive multi-vehicle crash, which occurred during the morning commute and caused major traffic delays in the area.
Singh pleaded guilty to charges including criminally negligent homicide. He now faces up to four years in prison on the top count. However, Suffolk County prosecutors have recommended a lighter sentence: six months in jail followed by five years of probation.
The crash sparked renewed concerns about commercial vehicle safety on Long Island roadways.
Sentencing is expected to take place later this summer.
