Child Airlifted to Hospital After Electric Dirt Bike Collides with Pickup Truck

BETHPAGE, N.Y. — A 14-year-old boy is in critical condition after the electric dirt bike he was riding was struck by an SUV at a residential intersection in Bethpage on Wednesday afternoon, according to Nassau County Police.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:53 p.m. at the intersection of Sherman Avenue and Seventh Street.

According to detectives, the 14-year-old was operating what police described as an e-bike westbound on Sherman Avenue while crossing Seventh Street when he was struck by a 2014 Dodge SUV driven by a 17-year-old female, who was traveling southbound on Seventh Street.

The vehicle involved is marketed by its manufacturer, Yozma, as an electric dirt bike.

The teenager suffered severe body trauma in the collision. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was airlifted by the Nassau County Police Aviation Unit from Meade Avenue Park to a local hospital, where he is listed in critical condition, police said.

The 17-year-old driver remained at the scene following the crash and was not injured.

The collision prompted a large emergency response from the Bethpage Fire Department and Nassau County Police. The intersection remained closed for several hours Wednesday afternoon and into the evening as detectives from the Nassau County Police Homicide Squad documented the scene and worked to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing.
