2 Dead After Shooting Sparks Explosion, Massive Fire, and Police Standoff in Queens

FAR ROCKAWAY, N.Y. — A major police investigation is underway after a shooting allegedly escalated into a fiery police standoff that ended with an explosion, multiple structures engulfed in flames, and more than a dozen people injured Saturday.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, officers from the NYPD's 101st Precinct responded to a home on Ocean Crest Boulevard near the intersection of Far Rockaway Boulevard following reports that a 33-year-old man had opened fire inside the residence, critically wounding several people believed to be members of his own family.

When officers arrived, they learned the suspect was reportedly armed with a shotgun, prompting a tactical response from the NYPD Emergency Service Unit (ESU).

Initial reports indicate that the suspect allegedly set the home on fire during the standoff, triggering an explosion that quickly spread flames throughout the residence and to neighboring buildings.

As the fire intensified, the suspect allegedly attempted to leave the burning home while still armed. According to witnesses, officers then opened fire, striking the suspect.

The NYPD has since confirmed the suspect was taken into custody, but has not yet released additional information regarding the suspect's condition or the circumstances surrounding his arrest.

Sources say at least two people believed to be members of the suspect's family were fatally shot inside the home. In addition, more than a dozen people were injured as a result of the fire and explosion. Officials have not yet released the extent of those injuries.

Firefighters battled heavy flames as emergency crews evacuated nearby residents and secured the scene. Multiple surrounding homes were impacted by the blaze.

The investigation remains active as NYPD detectives, crime scene investigators, and FDNY officials work to determine the full sequence of events. Authorities are expected to release additional information as the investigation progresses.
