E-Bike Rider Seriously Injured After Collision Shatters Prius Windshield in North Lindenhurst
NORTH LINDENHURST, N.Y. — A 49-year-old e-bike rider suffered serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle Friday night at a busy North Lindenhurst intersection.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:06 p.m. at the intersection of Straight Path and Route 109, according to officials.
Police said a 55-year-old man was driving a 2012 Toyota Prius southbound in the right lane of Straight Path and proceeding through a green traffic signal when the vehicle struck a Hunter Pro e-bike rider who was traveling westbound on Route 109 in the southwest crosswalk of the intersection.
The 49-year-old man operating the e-bike sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Prius was not injured in the crash.
Both the Toyota Prius and the Hunter Pro e-bike were impounded for routine safety inspections as detectives continue to investigate the collision.
Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives are asking anyone with information regarding the crash to contact the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
The crash is the latest in a string of serious e-bike incidents on Long Island over the past week.
On Wednesday, July 8, a 14-year-old riding an electric dirt bike was critically injured after being struck by a pickup truck at the intersection of Seventh Street and Sherman Avenue in Bethpage.
On Friday, a man was also critically injured after falling from his e-bike while riding on Merrick Avenue in Merrick. He was later reported to be in critical but stable condition.
