Bicyclist Rescued From Stillwell Woods Preserve in Syosset After Medical Emergency

SYOSSET, N.Y. — A bicyclist was rescued from deep inside Stillwell Woods Preserve Saturday morning after suffering a medical emergency while riding in the sprawling wooded park.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:35 a.m. inside Stillwell Woods Preserve, a roughly 270-acre park in Syosset featuring an extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails.

The Syosset Fire Department responded to the preserve and began efforts to locate and reach the bicyclist. First responders established a staging area at the parking lot and trailhead off South Woods Road as crews deployed into the woods.

Due to the bicyclist's location within the wooded trail system, the Syosset Fire Department's Robotics Unit deployed a drone to assist crews with the search and rescue operation.

Nassau County Police also responded, with the department's Emergency Services Unit, Aviation Unit and Emergency Ambulance Bureau assisting at the scene.

After reaching the bicyclist, Syosset firefighters transported him out of the woods aboard the department's Gator, an off-road utility vehicle frequently used for emergency operations in areas inaccessible to traditional emergency vehicles.

The bicyclist was brought back to the staging area and transported by ambulance to a local hospital. He was reported to be in stable condition.

The circumstances surrounding the medical emergency were not immediately available.
